Summary | Worldwide, on average, approximately 1500 women die daily from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. This amounts to more than half a million deaths annually, with the majority occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. This course aims to familiarise students with the main causes and underlying determinants of maternal morbidity and mortality. The key interventions to address these problems, approaches to implementation, and barriers to success will be examined. |
Course description |
The course will consist of the following 5 topics:
1. Maternal morbidity and mortality: determinants and consequences
2. Measurement of maternal mortality: methods, challenges and inequalities
3. Preventative and treatment interventions for maternal health: the continuum of care
4. Health system strengthening to improve maternal health
5. Tackling the underlying causes of maternal and women¿s health: local, national and international issues and approaches

Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme. |
