Course description |
The course will focus on the relevance and role of leadership for individuals and for organisations. Academic roles are multi-faceted, complex and subject to constant change. Leadership is a key requirement and challenge in these circumstances and is relevant to leadership of self and of others, leadership of discipline, projects, groups and organisations. It is relevant to all dimensions of an academic role: teaching, research, knowledge exchange and administration.
Through background readings, lectures, interactive sessions and group discussions we will introduce some of the key concepts in leadership, in general and with a specific focus on higher education. This will include the relationship between leadership and management, leadership styles and approaches, techniques to understand and improve leadership skills, performance and impact.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Draw on a deeper understanding of leadership in general and in higher education specifically
- Make a critical assessment of the approach taken to leadership by themselves and others
- Understand how to develop their leadership skills and approaches in different situations and settings (teaching, research, organisational)
- Use insights gained from the practice of others and themselves to develop practical strategies to address specific leadership challenges (including the leadership and management of people, projects and organisations
