Additional Information (Assessment) The assignment for this course consists of developing (or revising) a course with particular focus on the teaching and assessment strategies used to promote student autonomy and engagement (1000-1500 words)which is accompanied by a short essay (1000 words) discussing the principles guiding the design and explaining the choices made. Total word length 2000-2500 words.
In order to pass this course, participants will need to demonstrate a critical understanding of selected key concepts relating to the role and importance of developing student autonomy and engagement for high-quality learning within research-intensive settings. At the same time, they will be expected to offer a reflective analysis of how certain teaching and assessment strategies can be used to promote autonomy and engagement in their chosen course and subject setting, taking into account the perspectives of students taking the course.
Feedback Between Parts A and B, course participants work in pairs or 3s to design an innovative group activity which addresses one of the concepts explored in Part A and draws on one of the activities experienced and evaluated, also in Part A. During Part B, small groups facilitate the group activity and receive feedback from their peers and the Course Organiser using criteria designed by the whole group.

  1. demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts of 'autonomy' and 'engagement' in the context of higher education
  2. demonstrate creativity in their teaching
  3. make informed judgements about complex and unpredictable learning and teaching situations
  4. give and receive feedback on teaching practices and ideas
  5. teach in ways which draw on critical reflection on student and teacher roles
