| Summary | In the relatively brief period that Homo Sapiens has been the dominant species on the planet it has had a dramatic impact on the fabric and functions of the planet. This much is irrefutable, as is the evidence that this is leading to further, and perhaps irreversible, effects on planetary systems, climate, biodiversity, and related concerns of human well-being and economic stability.
This course critically explores aspects of the scientific and social context of the above situation and our responses to it. In particular, participants will consider educational responses to the contested concept of sustainability. This will involve consideration of the breadth and complexity of concepts of sustainability. It will also involve challenging and partially re-grounding present understandings and practices of sustainability. This will be done by a critical examination of the internationally diverse set of practices that sail beneath the flag of convenience that is 'Learning for Sustainability', 'Education for Sustainable Development', and their variants.

| Pre-requisites | This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in Learning for Sustainability. It is not necessary to be enrolled in a teacher training programme. Students need to have completed two years of undergraduate study. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the core concepts underpinning sustainability (with an emphasis on learning for sustainability) and critically engage with the concept of 'learning for sustainability' to evaluate a range of practices currently used in teaching and learning;
- demonstrate knowledge of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of sustainability issues and the relevance of these issues across school and university curricula;
- demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of the roles scientific knowledge plays, or not, in people's understanding of, and 'belief' in, climate change, the need for sustainability, etc;
- critically analyse educational leadership in relation to sustainability, the ways in which global challenges are publicised and previewed, and consolidate knowledge of theory and practice in organisational change in order to inform participants' own professional practice;
- undertake a comparative exploration of international curricula in order to critically assess the success of the transition from local to global learning contexts and offer professional insights into educational issues relating to 'learner helplessness'.
