| Course description |
Academic Description:
This course aims to enrich postgraduate student research experience in religious studies. It introduces students to the research culture in religious studies by highlighting the different approaches, themes and resources available. It cultivates good academic practice by providing training in theory, method, and preparing a dissertation research proposal for their final Masters dissertations.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course has different components that students choose depending on the focus of their dissertations. Compulsory sessions include resources in religious studies which highlights the various learned societies, academic databases and conferences, and training in preparing a research proposal for their Masters dissertation. Optional sessions offer a variety of theory and method, from historical, textual, cultural, anthropological and sociological approaches to fieldwork, archival, and engaging with primary texts.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has a programme of two-hour weekly meetings. Depending on the session, students will be required to prepare by reading assigned texts. Students will have the opportunity to construct a dissertation project that focuses on a topic of their interest in conversation with a lecturer. Students are required to orally present their dissertation proposal, as well as submit a written proposal both of which will be assessed. Through their participation in lectures, seminars, written work, and feedback offered, students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have an excellent knowledge of the research culture in religious studies, and will be able to distinguish between good and bad scholarly practice.
- Able to demonstrate critical engagement with the selected theory and method in religious studies and apply that to their dissertation project.
- Prepare and submit a coherent research proposal for their dissertation project.
- An ability to identify key terms and their meanings, and demonstrate good judgment about how to assess the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
