| Summary | This course will teach students how to collaboratively research, produce, and disseminate non-fiction film. It pulls together students from a variety of disciplines and allows them to play to their subject specific strengths, while gaining knowledge of how practitioners in other areas can enhance their engagement with their own subject areas. |
| Course description |
This is a core course for animation students, but an elective for students outside of animation.
The course will cover:
Documentary form and principle
Historical and contemporary precedents
Ethical practice in research
Risk assessment
Collaborative and reflective practice
Data visualisation
Interview technique
Compositing technique
Sound recording technique
Editing technique
Production scheduling and management
Film promotion
Distribution & Dissemination
The students will attend a series of lectures and screenings as individuals that cover the theoretical, historical and ethical issues around the emergent conventions of animated documentary. Seminars following on from these lectures will centre on principles of interdisciplinary collaboration, and then the students will be required to form teams that embody a range of practical and theoretical skills, i.e. no one subject area team. The course from this point on will consist of teamwork in the initiation of project ideas, their proof through research, and eventual realisation in a documentary film. The practical processes of film making will be explored in technical workshops, and master classes by invited practitioners and researchers. The weight of teaching will fall equally between the Film & TV and the Animation departments. Films will be assessed as a shared document of process for each team, but individual students will be required to maintain a reflective journal that details their contribution to the film and evaluates their performance on the course.
Outputs could be related to the research done by the students themselves, or they could opt to work in a more service capacity to communicate the research of others within the university, particularly funded research projects.

Students will be required to provide:
Drawing and painting materials (pens, pencils, crayons, charcoal, markers, paper, sketch pads for example.)
Sculpting materials (wire, modelling clay, balsa wood for example.)
Animation supplies (Peg bar, animation paper and cels for example.)
