Summary | This is a core course option for the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) programme. It provides a critical overview of theories and research on cognitive psychology and its applications to mental health. |
Course description |
The course is composed of five x 2.5 hour lectures: 1) Approaches to human cognition, 2) Perception and Attention, 3) Memory, 4) Thinking and Reasoning, 5) Cognition and Emotion. Throughout the course the implications of mental health for cognitive processes will be considered. The last session will focus on mood and cognition, specifically research on anxiety, depression and cognitive biases.
The lectures will be complemented by resources and teaching materials made available through LEARN. Students will also be encouraged to contribute to student-led discussions to supplement the lectures on the materials provided within the course. Encouragement of peer discussion within the course will engage students in deeper critical reflection on the theories presented in the lectures and associated materials.

Summative assessment will be a 2-hour exam worth 100% of marks, consisting of three short answer questions (100-200 words) and an extended essay question (from a choice of titles).
