| Course description |
1. To enable students to develop their knowledge of and expertise in clearly defined areas of their discipline that interest them.
2. To equip students with knowledge and understanding of relevant theoretical and methodological influences relating to the areas of their discipline that interest them.
3. To enable students to develop the ability to subject to critical scrutiny existing approaches within areas of their disciplines that interest them and to develop well informed new positions.
4. To help students develop the ability to formulate, research and deliver independent research projects in areas of interest within their discipline.
5. To equip students with the skills for further postgraduate study, should they wish to pursue it.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- To undertake independent research guided by and contributing to the theory and knowledge in their chosen field and to present the insights obtained in a manner consistent with academic standards and conventions.
- To interact with confidence within relevant communities of scholars, users or other interested parties, including networking skills and the ability to understand the impact of their contributions within a wider context (and when relevant beyond the confines of their own discipline).
- To use an appropriate range of technical, technological (IT) and other practical skills such as time management and the ability to work to deadlines under pressure, which will allow them to develop, deliver and present their work at the appropriate standards, as well as disseminate it widely in relevant contexts.
