| Summary | The course is intended to help students prepare for their dissertations by getting feedback on their chosen topics and attending research seminars. Students should get a better understanding of the scope of Chinese studies and the methods and approaches used in various fields of research. |
| Course description |
The course builds on earlier introductions of postgraduate research. Students attend a preparatory session on dissertation topics and research in Chinese studies in Week 2. Students must attend a minimum of three sessions of the Asian Studies Seminar Series and write comments on these sessions on the course forum on Learn. Students should also prepare statements of their research topics in discussion with allocated supervisors. During the workshop session, all students will present short 20 min introductions to their dissertation research projects.

Students will be asked to formulate a statement of their research topic, including aims and objectives, methods and significance of their research (1,000 words). In addition, students should also prepare a summary of recent research relevant to their topic in the form of an annotated bibliography or literature review (2,000 words). |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- formulate a research problem and will be aware of the appropriate methods for dealing with different modes of cultural and social science research.
- identify and articulate research projects and present and discuss them with informed audience.
- give a presentation on a topic of research, outlining the topic, sources, and methodology.
- give and receive feedback on research topics in Chinese studies.
