Summary | This course introduces students to particular aspects of the discipline of sculpture, in particular creating sculpture through the reproductive process of mould making and casting. As part of this course students will examine and question the transformative journey of a found object to an artwork; through studying historic and contemporary examples as well through experiential learning through making. |
Course description |
Students will start with a non-art/found object and by employing the process of casting, in particular flexible mold-making, take it on a transformative journey over the semester questioning and examining how and why it becomes an art work in their eyes. This approach simultaneously encourages process and conceptual development from the offset while learning many of the skills associated with casting throughout the course.
Physical outcomes may be in wax, plaster, rubber, porcelain, gelatin, ice, cement, chocolate, etc. anything that is safe to use and can be poured then set.
The course will also contextualize studio activity with presentations about personal and individual practice, current internationally known artists who use casting as part of their practice and alongside this will include visits to relevant local exhibitions and offer guided tours of Edinburgh's professional foundries.
