This course is designed to give you skills and knowledge of the complex factors that need be evaluated when planning the development of a strategic area or region. You will be required to critically study a selected area in depth, to develop a vision for this area and put forward alternative development policies.
Course description Strategic Spatial Vision Project will cover the following content:

The meaning and scope of spatial visions and strategies, including their aims and rationale.
The core principles in relation to the form and content of spatial visions and strategies.
The notion of the city region as a locus for spatial visions and strategies.
The national and international policy context for spatial visions and strategies at city region level.
The relationship between housing markets, local economies, the role of town centres, and transport and accessibility issues, with respect to spatial visions and strategies at city region level.
The application of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to spatial visions and strategies.
The development of policies to implement the spatial strategies.

Pre-requisites Co-requisites Students MUST also take: ( Urban Design for Health and Wellbeing (ARHW11033) AND Urban Design Theory (ARHW11035) AND Sustainable Design and Development (ARHW11036)) AND USD Dissertation (ARCH11201)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Generate visionary and imaginative responses to spatial planning challenges which are realistic and derive from substantial investigation and analysis of relevant data and other evidence.
  2. Understand the relationship between policy-making and implementation, market processes, built form and development patterns.
  3. Evaluate the economic, social and environmental implications of alternative development strategies.
  4. Use effective research and appraisal skills presenting data and information to support your argument.
