SummaryThis course provides a foundation in techniques and theory used in the design and development of digital media for screen and print publishing. Areas covered include an introduction to graphic design theory (form, colour, typography etc.), page layout (grids), branding, user interfaces and web design. The content of the course addresses design context such as aesthetic and audience, usability and the impact of form and platform on functionality. Practical work includes creating design concepts and user interfaces and showcasing these via multiple design mediums.
Course description The course is delivered through a series of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, clinics and class-based critique of practical exercises and coursework submissions.

Additional Information (Assessment) Coursework is used to assess progress in, and understanding of, the practice of Digital Design, and allows students to develop and apply knowledge and skills across the duration of the course as the focus shifts from small assets to more complex integrated design work.

Submission 1 -
Digital Design Concepts and Documentation - 40%
Submission 2 -
Digital Design Implementation and Documentation - 60%

The first submission addresses LO1, 2, 3 and 5 and consists of practical work in creating digital design prototypes informed by design theory and supported by a written reflective critique.

The second submission addresses LO1 - 5 and consists of in creating digital design media informed by design theory and practice and supported by a written reflective critique.

The Learning Outcomes and submissions support characteristics of knowledge of professional practice, skill acquisition and application, creativity, critical analysis, communication and autonomy.

Tutors will scale grades and refer to University's Common Marking Scheme:
Feedback Students receive verbal feedback throughout the course in clinics and class based critique sessions of submissions and practical exercises.

Formative written feedback is provided within 15 working days of submission of assessed coursework.

Feedback may refer to the risks taken in response to the brief, the conceptual approach you¿ve taken with your design, the quality and character of the design, the clarity of the written components, contextual and critical relevance, and any technical issues that may help you in future. The feedback will be constructive, be may not address every detail of the work submitted.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Knowledge of graphic and user interface design theory.
  2. Knowledge of current and emerging practice in web and print design.
  3. Ability to create and manipulate bitmap and vector artwork.
  4. Ability to develop and publish design concepts utilising principles associated with visual language.
  5. Ability to research, plan, prepare, implement and evaluate print and web design.
