SummaryThis is a distance learning course, delivered entirely online using as its main delivery platform our virtual learning environment . The choice of this mode of delivery enables you to shape your study pattern around your working day and other commitments.

You will learn how architecture is influenced through sustainable development and how in turn how the development of our cities is affecting how we deal with critical environmental issues. Architecture is often said to hold a mirror up to the aspirations and values of the society.

Such a field of study is especially relevant given the urgency of current debates regarding climate change and the consequences of environmental damage caused by our activities on the planet. This course does not seek to be a comprehensive education in sustainable design ¿ such an endeavour is too complex to distil in such a relatively concise form as offered here. Instead, it seeks to convey the essential theories, debates and strategies that inform the relationship between sustainability and architecture.

In completing this course, you will have an appreciation of the key processes by which sustainable strategies can be adopted at the scale of the city, neighbourhood and individual building.

You will complete an essay counting towards 30% of the total assessment. It relates specifically to the third learning outcome.
You undertake a weblog journal that counts towards 20% of the total assessment. This is a learning diary that relates to learning outcomes 2 and 3
Feedback Formative feedback is given to you during the course to help you understand the learning material and assist you in the assignments we ask you to do. Summative feedback is given on a finished piece of assignment work that advises you how well you have performed in terms of the aims and objectives of the assignment and overall in relation to the course.

You will receive formative feedback for all your submitted components of assessment. This will be a key way in which we tutor you on this distance learning course.

You will receive summative feedback with a grade for each item of coursework you complete.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain knowledge and understanding of key sustainable concepts as applicable to architecture.
  2. Acquire an appreciation of the varying scales of enquiry in formulating sustainable design strategies
  3. Develop the ability to critically appraise the built environment through sustainable criteria
