Summary | This course is a studio based design course. We look at how some of the theory contained in Sustainable Theory and Contexts are translated into design proposals. The course is speculative in nature where credit is given to process and creativity. We examine two specific themes:
Infrastructure Networks
We explore at an urban scale the role of both physical and virtual infrastructures in the formation of settlement frameworks. We look at utopias, autonomy and connection and how a specific position can affect design propositions.
Sustainable Transformations
We enquire at the scale of the building how environmental response and building skin can transform working environments and minimise impact in the built environment. We look at how existing buildings and structures can be retrofitted and made inherently adaptable and flexible.

Additional Information (Assessment) |
The course will be assessed in two ways:
1. You complete a group design project based on the scale of a settlement. It will constitute 40% of the final mark for the course and will address all the learning outcomes for this course.
2. You will complete an individual design project based on the scale of an individual building. It will constitute 60^ of the final mark for the course and will address all the learning outcomes for this course.
Assignment 2 will include an element of group and individual work but students will be assessed separately. |
Feedback |
Formative feedback is given to you during the course to help you understand the learning material and assist you in the assignments we ask you to do. Summative feedback is given on a finished piece of assignment work that advises you how well you have performed in terms of the aims and objectives of the assignment and overall in relation to the course.
This course is based around design projects. As a result, you will receive regular formative feedback at least twice for each project prior to your final submission.
For coursework [1] you will receive summative feedback during the semester. For coursework [2] you will receive written formative feedback on your final presentation to class and then summative feedback on submission of your work.
This course is delivered largely through studio tutorials, workshops and reviews during which you will receive verbal feedback as your work progresses.
