SummaryStudents will form small teams working on a project each with its own project supervisor. Whatever the subject matter, each project provides an opportunity to prepare experimental work for public exhibition/display and for the cohort to find practical, creative solutions to problems imposed by real limitations of technology, time and personnel.
Meanwhile you are expected to explore a wealth of new technologies, developing an articulate understanding of the potential for their use in digital design, sound and performance.

Course description The course will run as a studio with iterative development, group discussion, design development, presentations, criticism, and feedback. Tuition will be provided in the use of specialist tools and devices where applicable.

Additional Information (Assessment) Assessed submission 1: 30% A group submission consisting of work agreed with your project supervisor
Presentation week: Week 12 A non-examined presentation of the work to the general public.
Assessed submission 2: 60% Final submission of the project work.
Group Contribution: 10% Assessment of individual contribution to the group's work
Feedback Formal feedback will be provided along with marks for each assessment. Additionally, on-going formative feedback will be available throughout the course in the form of regular meetings with your project supervisor; during a preview week ahead of public presentation; and during / after public presentation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Make skilful use of digital tools and techniques in the context of a design project
  2. Develop an appreciation of the collaborative and integrative nature of design projects that involve digital media, and will have further developed appropriate group working skills
  3. Build up an awareness of, and some capability in working with, soft and hardware beyond desktop use
  4. Consider and develop modes of presentation appropriate to external and large-scale presentation formats
  5. Hone skills in responding to and progressing a theoretical position about some aspect of the project context

Additional Class Delivery Information Thursday Morning 11am-1pm (occasional tutorials, 11am Wednesday mornings, to be advised).
Most lectures and tutorials will take place in the Graduate School Atrium, School of Arts Culture and Environment, Alison House, 12 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9DF.

Students advance through a series of lectures, demonstrations, practical project work, exercises and critique in a group context. Full attendance and punctual arrival is expected of all students whether auditing the course or taking it for credit.
