SummaryThis course provides an introduction into ecosystem health within the wider context of One Health
Course description The health of ecosystems is dependent on their structure and function, and plays a critical role in the health of the human, animal and plant populations they support. This course provides an introduction into ecosystem health within the wider context of One Health. Approaches to defining and assessing ecosystem health are considered and ecosystem function and the role of biodiversity are discussed. The concept of ecosystem services and natural capital are outlined. The science behind resilience is introduced including how it relates to sustainability of social-ecological systems. Current understanding of climate change and its potential impact on human and animal health is introduced. Relevant examples will be used to illustrate common problems and how solutions may be applied.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand ecosystem function including nutrient recycling and the flux of matter.
  2. Understand the concept of ecosystem health including examples of how it may be assessed and measured
  3. Discuss the role of biodiversity in ecosystems and how it relates to ecosystem health and resilience.
  4. Consider the importance of ecosystem health as it relates to human health, animal health and global climate change
  5. Understand what is meant by ecosystem services and natural capital, and be familiar with their practical application.
