SummaryThe course will deliver the theory and practical training in specific laboratory techniques that are fundamental to modern biological science with hands on experience in the laboratory.
Course description Theory and practical sessions on modern laboratory techniques in animal sciences, including mammalian and prokaryotic cell culture, manipluation of DNA, RNA and protein.

Students will develop and enhance their understanding and experience with essential laboratory techniques. Upon completion students will have reached the learning outcomes.

Feedback Feedback and marks for all items will be given within fifteen working days of the submission date where possible. For the major written items, students will submit an abstract/outline before the final due date, and receive feedback within two days to guide their preparation. Feedback on computer and laboratory activities will be provided during the session. All written items will be marked by at least two markers.

Opportunities for feedback arise within timetabled classes (tutorials, practicals, lectures) as well as more formally through comments on specific pieces of work. Feedback can be provided not only on coursework assignments, tests and exam answers, but also on activities that are not formally assessed such as class discussions, group exercises, problem solving, and in the course of developing project plans and proposals. Course staff will endeavour to provide timely feedback on all activities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. design an experiment, develop hypotheses, understand appropriate experimental controls, recording and analysis of data;
  2. prepare reagents, carry out assay techniques, use microscopes and laboratory equipment;
  3. understand and have experience of cell culture and microbiology;
  4. perform a bioinformatics analysis and use publicly available databases;
  5. understand modern immunological methods, genetic manipulations, molecular biology techniques.
