SummaryCalvin's Institutes is a classic text of Christian theology. In this course students explore Calvin's ideas in depth, in seminar discussions of the text, and through lectures which set the Institutes in the wider context of Calvin's writings, Genevan practice, 16th century controversy and modern scholarship.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least two Theology/History courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, students will have acquired knowledge and understanding of:
- key themes in the Institutes;
- the 16th century context of Calvin's thought;
- important theological concepts in Reformation debates;
- recent scholarship on Calvin's theology;
- recent scholarship on the political, social and cultural context of his work;
- the place of Calvin in the development of Christian theology.
Students will be able to:
- work in detail with Calvin's text, and explain its theological and historical significance;
- juxtapose and compare the ideas of different thinkers ¿ in Calvin's debates with his contemporaries, and in debates among modern scholars;
- transfer enhanced analytical skills to other courses and future work;
- transfer enhanced skills of presentation, oral and written, to other courses and future work;
- demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings;
- demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
