This course introduces the theology and spirituality of reconciliation, examining the dynamics of reconciliation and exploring some practical aspects of how to live in a reconciling way. |

Academic Description:
The course aims to explore the nuanced understanding of the theology of reconciliation as it has been developed throughout Christian history. Starting with theories concerning the atonement and moving through to practical application of reconciliation in religious conflicts, the students will be able to see how biblical concepts develop in the academy. Through the analysis of the use of reconciliation in other world religions, students will also be able to compare and contrast understandings of theology and spirituality across a wider religious background. Finally, students will be able to take their understandings of reconciliation and see how they apply to contemporary conflicts that involve religion, identity, territory, and nationalism.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course will cover theoretical issues in the field, as well as offering an historical survey of selected biblical/theological texts. Themes including reconciliation, forgiveness, repentance, truth and justice will be covered, as will the role of reconciliation in the theology and spirituality of the major world religions. Application of the understandings of reconciliation will be applied to contemporary case studies for discussion and debate.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The students will read a selection of texts on the relevant topic each week. There will be a time in class for discussion of the texts as well as any questions raised. This will be followed by a more structured lecture on the topic at hand. Midway through the course there will be an essay whereby the students will be asked to write on aspects of the theology of reconciliation. Students will also be required to participate in an in class presentation. The exam will cover material from the entire course, and the last class will allow students the opportunity to ask questions about relevant material.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of some of the key dimensions of theologies of reconciliation including the definition and dynamics of reconciliation and the contours of a spirituality of reconciliation.
- Engage critically with primary sources on reconciliation, forgiveness, and repentance.
- Participate in constructive discussion and debate with other seminar members in a respectful manner.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop and deliver a presentation for a seminar.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings, along with good judgment concerning how to determine the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
