| Summary | PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE FORMS PART OF THE NEW DEGREE PROGRAMME: MA GLOBAL AND INTERNATIONAL SOCIOLOGY. THIS COURSE IS NORMALLY TAKEN IN THIRD YEAR AND WILL NOT BE TAUGHT UNTIL 2015-2016.
This course is a required course for all students taking the MA in Global and International Sociology, and is normally taken in the third year of that degree programme. It would not need to be delivered until 2015-16.
It addresses the problem of doing sociology from a global perspective, exploring concepts such as 'globalisation' 'world society' and 'world systems'. It considers both long-term (historical) and short-term (from the present) perspectives for understanding changing global social relations. It also engages the problems of defining 'society' and 'methodological nationalism' as well as questions of how to formulate sociological research on a global scale. Within this remit a variety of global processes may be explored, such as: migration, diaspora, international finance, war, aid, popular music, the internet, etc., to substantiate the underlying issues. |

By the end of the course students should be able to:
* Articulate the key challenges of doing sociology from a global perspective.
* Identify and define key concepts in the global study of human society.
* Assess the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to studying society globally.
* Articulate how a global perspective might inform an honours project dissertation.
* Communicate effectively on this topic, both verbally and in writing.
