Summary | This course explores the theme of the three-dimensional or physical manifestations of Scotland's traditional culture systems through a series of thematic case studies. Emphasis is placed upon the examination of material culture exchange and development in relation to such issues as status, ethnicity and identity. Within this framework, form and function, aesthetics and semiotics are explored from an ethnological stance. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a solid familiarity with material culture theory, including museology and collection theory;
- demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the concept of objects as evidence;
- produce critical texts on the concept of material culture, having developed experience through course work tasks;
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the empirical context of material culture within a Scottish cultural framework.
