Summary | This course introduces students to the practice of politics and international relations outside academia. It helps students to understand potential career routes after PIR honours and the ways in which knowledge and skills acquired in PIR degrees relate to careers. The course includes a variety of presentations from applied ¿political scientists¿ as well as guidance on how to communicate effectively with non-academic audiences. |

Students will be assessed on two components. These will consist of two short (approximately 500 word) student responses.
Awards are made on a pass/fail basis. You MUST pass the course to proceed to honours.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the application of politics & international relations knowledge and skills beyond academia
- Identify different career routes following the completion of a degree in Politics & International Relations
- Develop key skills in communicating political and IR arguments to non-academic audiences
- Identify how to use the curriculum, and additional learning resources at Edinburgh University to facilitate the transition into post-academic life.

This course will run over ten weeks and consist of five bi-weekly two hour sessions led by the course convenor. During the weeks when there is no scheduled Fundamentals session, students will be able to get together in small groups to work through a particular theme or problem collectively. |
