Summary	The dissertation as an extended piece of scholarship in which students have the opportunity to study in some depth a topic of their own choosing. The subject will be chosen iteratively on the basis of studentsż own interests, what relevant staff are able to supervise, and what is feasible given the literature and time available. The dissertation allows the student to develop depth of comprehension and critical analysis. The dissertation should have clearly defined objectives and boundaries, achievable in the time and word length available. The exact format of the dissertation will vary from case to case depending on the work done. It may take the form of a scientific experiment, a literature review, a management plan. Its object is to provide the student with an opportunity for demonstrating their competence in the chosen area of study. In the past students have written dissertations on local food production, applying food security assessment methods in particular locations, fisheries, nutrition, supply chain analysis to name a few.
