SummaryThis course will focus on the pedagogic issues about teaching and learning, illustrated by case studies examples. More specifically, it will consider the:
- The use of aims, goals and learning outcomes, behavioural objectives, competences and capability.
- The roles of the teacher: enabler, facilitator, mentor, didactic, trainer, culture-custodian and the legacy of Socrates
- Models associated with learning.
- Study skills: acquiring and using information
- Strategies for learning and teaching: lectures; problem-based learning; negotiated learning contracts; self-directed learning; clinical and other professional skills.
- The issues associated with e-learning.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate several models of teaching.
  2. Develop approaches that take into account individual learner differences, including background, beliefs, motivation and preferences.
  3. Critically reflect on a range of theories of learning and their capacity to analyse and inform practice.
  4. Critique the role of the teacher in formal and informal learning situations.
  5. Appreciate the impact and importance of the learning environment.
