Summary | This course will examine the films of Italian film, theatre and opera director Luchino Visconti and specifically, his engagement with a wide variety of literary works (from authors such as James M. Cain to Giovanni Verga to Albert Camus to Thomas Mann). The unparalleled cultural richness of Visconti's oeuvre, its links not only with literature but with music, theatre and opera make it an ideal inter-disciplinary subject for study. |

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand the development of an individual filmmaker over a career spanning more than three decades.
- Explain how, through both image and sound, Visconti transferred literary works from page to screen.
- Describe how Visconti made use of literary sources and why certain works were of importance during particular periods.
