This course is designed for students new to poetry, especially those who feel that poetry is difficult or intimidating. By beginning with more accessible contemporary poetry and working back to more formal and historical material, the course aims to demystify the genre and build student confidence in reading, understanding and discussing poetic works in various forms. It aims to help students develop skills such as close reading, analysis and interpretation and give them a solid grounding in key styles and forms, which they can draw on when reading poetry in the future. |
| Course description |
A range of poems from contemporary writing to Chaucer.
Week 1: Reading a poem.
Week 2: Contemporary British Poetry.
Week 3: Post War Poetry 1940 - 1960.
Week 4: Modernist Poets.
Week 5: The dramatic monologue: Tennyson, Browning.
Week 6: The Romantics: Wordsworth and Keats.
Week 7: Metaphysical Poetry.
Week 8: The Sonnet.
Week 9: Chaucer.
Week 10: Reading the Poem again.
