SummaryThis printmaking course will consider the print as a work of art produced by contemporary artists using traditional printmaking techniques in an age of digital reproduction.
Students will explore, develop and combine traditional methods of printmaking by using a press and by hand to produce print works.
Techniques will include monotype printing, relief wood block and lino block and intaglio etching techniques. Line, tone, monochrome and colour, collage, multiple block printing, text with image, scale, printing from found surfaces, installation and modes of display will be addressed.
Students will be encouraged to undertake independent and tutor led research into contemporary printmaking practices and practitioners. They will develop and extend their own visual vocabulary in printmaking from sketchbooks and through the use of other media as image gathering tools. This can include sculptural objects, film, and photography.
Course description Over the class sessions the course will cover:

Introduction to Monoprint and Monotype printing techniques. This will include; hand printing from a prepared plate and the removal and addition of monochrome and coloured inks by hand to print using an intaglio press.
Introduction to Relief printmaking techniques. This includes printing by hand and using a relief press to produce a print from a Woodcut , Linocut and found material . Students will learn how to create tone and print in colour by cutting and masking out . Printing over collage material and the repetition of images printed off-register will also be demonstrated.
Introduction to Intaglio techniques including Collagraphy. Hard ground line etching, creating tone and how to produce a multi-coloured print from one plate. This will include how to prepare a plate for etching, inking up and printing using prepared papers.

Additional Information (Assessment) This course will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio of visual art and/or design works within the discipline studied. This will include a selection of resolved art and/or design works, preparatory studies, visual research and evidence of a contextual awareness through a completed sketchbook and/or visual journal. The work must be presented in a clear and professional manner appropriate to the discipline. The submission should include work undertaken within the class as well as directed and independent study out with the class. Typically, this will comprise:
Class Contact hours: 27.5 (work done during the class)
Directed hours: 27.5 (work the tutor has set for students to do each week in their own time)
Independent Study Hours: 45 (work students set themselves to do, relevant to the discipline studied)
The combined submission will be assessed against the three learning outcomes for this course. These are equally weighted and each will be given a percentage grade. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each learning outcome and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. By the end of the course, through attending classes and engaging in directed and independent study, students should be able to:

    RESEARCH
    Develop and extend their visual and written resources and structure their research material in a clear and considered manner which enables them as artist printmakers to produce images through the medium of printmaking using a technique appropriate to their composition
  2. PRACTICE
    Demonstrate an effective and considered use of single monochrome, reduction and multiple block multiple colour printing, the use of intaglio printmaking techniques including hard ground etching and collagraphy, registration and editioning and an effective and considered use of masking and stencilling and the manipulation and application of printing inks
  3. PRESENTATION
    Present a body of original printed works using traditional printmaking techniques which reflect a knowledge of contemporary printmaking practices
