| Summary | THIS IS A FOR-CREDIT COURSE OFFERED BY THE CENTRE FOR OPEN LEARNING (COL); ONLY STUDENTS REGISTERED WITH COL SHOULD BE ENROLLED.
This course introduces the moving image for students and artists interested in developing creative ideas with video. The focus will be on the fundamentals of moving image and time-based media, together with digital video editing. The course covers developing concepts for moving image work using storyboarding, capturing and importing video, creating a rough-cut edit, fine-tuning the edit, working with effects and transitions, working with sound, and exporting a short video piece for DVD. Students will also have the opportunity to view and discuss a range of contemporary artists' video and short films. |

This course will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio of visual art works within the discipline studied. This will include a selection of resolved art works, preparatory studies, visual research and evidence of a contextual awareness through a completed sketchbook and/or visual journal. The work must be presented in a clear and professional manner appropriate to the discipline. The submission should include work undertaken within the class as well as directed and independent study out with the class. Typically, this will comprise:
-Class Contact hours: 27.5 (work undertaken during the class)
-Directed hours: 27.5 (work the tutor has set students to each week in their own time)
-Independent Study Hours: 45 (work students set themselves to do, relevant to the discipline studied)
The combined submission will be assessed against the three learning outcomes for this course. These are equally weighted and each will be given a percentage grade. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each learning outcome and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- By the end of the course, through attending classes and engaging in directed and independent study, students should be able to: RESEARCH Develop contextual and critical thinking though the production of a reflective visual moving image journal to support the planning and creative development of project work.
- PRACTICE: Shoot, import and edit video footage, and apply appropriate digital video editing effects, transitions and sound to create a short 1 - 3 minute video piece.
- PRESENT: Prepare video appropriately for viewing, and present a finished authored DVD with supporting contextual material
