This course provides students with the opportunity to explore an area of interest in more depth than allowed in a standard taught course. For MSc students this is expected to take the form of reviews of the literature in topics related to their specialism.
Course description Students and teaching assistants will be matched up based on interests/specialisms at the start of semester 1. Students will be given examples of good reviews, guidance on literature reviewing, literature searching and citation methods. In addition they may be directed towards research seminars in relevant topics. The student should then explore the general area over the semester in consulation with their teaching assistant. It is expected that each student will submit two minor reviews that critically evaluate a single research paper or seminar presentation during the first half of the semester. During the latter half of the semester, students will produce a substantial review of a research area.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Select literature appropriate for the review subject , and critically evaluate research literature in the chosen area
  2. Search and use appropriately databases of scientific literature
  3. Evaluate and search traditional library resources
  4. Discuss a research topic in detail leading to new hypotheses
  5. Deliver a detailed and balanced report on a research topic
