SummaryThis course aims to build on the concepts introduced in the year 1 course Applied epidemiology and surveillance to provide greater understanding of animal disease survey design and analysis.
Course description In this course, cluster sampling will be explored in further detail. You will be using the software, WINPEPI, and the Windows version of EPI INFO. Additionally using the software, CSAMPLE, sample sizes for cluster samples will be calculated. You will also use a simple program, SampleXS, to calculate cluster-sample sizes when the design effect is known. The effects of stratification will also be discussed.

This course will include a revision of field survey design, cluster sampling, cluster sampling strategy, weighting, finally you will analyse data from a veterinary field study.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Describe the effects of sampling variability, clustering, stratification and weighting on survey design and analysis, and know how to adjust for them
  2. Be able to use CSurvey and Epi Info software to design a veterinary field survey

To make effective use of written and visual means to critique, negotiate, create and communicate understanding. While oral skills are encouraged, until we are certain that the use of these technologies in our online programmes will not prohibit the contribution of any student due to their geographical circumstances, this suite of technologies has not been fully implemented.
The use of communication as a tool for collaborating and relating to others is vital in these online programmes, the vast majority of information is text based and students must be able to clearly present their thoughts, ideas and the logical progression of a discussion to one another.
Seek and value open feedback to inform genuine self-awareness. While on programme students are also encourage to participate in peer review, providing open and honest feedback in a clear and supportive manner. This open dialogue is vital in furthering the understanding of how their own performance might be improved.
Recognise the benefits of communicating with those beyond their immediate environments
Use effective communication to articulate their skills as identified through self-reflection.
