Summary | This course provides an advanced introduction to specific research methods and problems in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. The course begins with an explanation of research proposals and structures before moving on to different and competing approaches to IMES scholarship. It fosters intellectual and pedagogical exchanges between students, and allows them to discuss subject-specific concerns and methodologies. |

Additional Information (Assessment) |
Students will be asked to submit a 1000 statement of a research topic, including the aims, objectives, methods and significance of the proposed research. They will also be required to write a 4000 word expanded outline including an annotated bibliography that addresses recent research relevant to their identified topic. Both pieces of work will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. |

- Formulate a research problem
- Identify relevant sources and methodologies
- Provide a critical discussion of the relevant state of the literature
- Identify the main components of the introduction of a piece of research, and structure it accordingly
