SummaryThis course considers the works of several medieval authors writing in Persian.

The course IMES10076, Of Wine, Love and Loss: Reading Iran through Classical Persian Literature, is a version of this course studying the texts in English translation.
The course IMES11053, Mystics, Monarchs and Lovers: Reading Classical Persian Literature in Translation, is a version of this course studying the texts in English translation for Postgraduate students.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain an overview of the history and development of classical Persian literature.
  2. Develop an understanding of the social and historical developments within Iran.
  3. Evaluate primary and secondary materials relating to the study of Persian literature.
  4. Engage with classical Persian poetry and prose in its primary source.
  5. Develop an understanding of the rhetorical devices employed in classical Persian litearure
