| Summary | This course is designed to lead on from Persian 1 and provides a further development of linguistic skills in the modern language. Grammatical structures and oral skills are further developed. The course is intended not only to lay the foundation of Honours work, but also to be a self-contained unit. Knowledge of basic grammar structures will be revised and extended. Students will begin to acquire the vocabulary of educated reading and conversation.

| Course description |
This course provides deeper understanding of grammar and linguistic skills in modern Persian. Detailed grammatical structures are provided. Oral skills are further developed through covering social and political topics. Selected texts in Modern Persian are studied and are supplemented by an introduction to the modern literature and culture of Iran. Aural skills are further developed by use of media. Vocabulary will cover a range of different social and cultural topics. There will be weekly quizzes and in class exercises and a combination of the exercises and photocopied extracts from different books. Translation is an important part of this course with regular translation home works and in-class translation exercises. In-class translation exercises are regularly given to students. The students will extend their knowledge Persian grammar. It is aimed to introduce Persian language, culture and civilization to the student more deeply.

Regular written exercises and occasional class tests will be set and marked (15% of final mark); 1 three-hour interim examination plus oral examination at end of first semester (25% of final mark); 1 three-hour examination plus oral examination at end of second semester (60% of final mark).

| Feedback |
Feedback is frequently given to students in different forms for their different tasks such as home works, translations, weekly tests, compositions, oral presentations and aural exercises. Both oral and written, individual and group feedback are given for during the semester. Both summative and formative feedbacks are important. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Students will acquire a good grasp of intermediate Persian grammar. They will be able to read and understand straightforward texts in intermediate texts in Persian. They will be able to read and understand simple reports and stories.
- Students will be able to carry on intermediate level conversation in Persian. They will be able to describe a variety of familiar subjects and communicate in detail about their experiences, ideas, opinion.
- Students will be able to understand main points of discussion on familiar topics and everyday subjects. They will be able to understand straightforward information on familiar everyday topics.
- Students will be able to compose a text of around 150 words on different familiar topics and explain, describe and discuss the subject forming longer sentences and using a variety of grammatical constructions such as different conjunctions. They will be able to translate a paragraph (around 70 words) from and into Persian.
- Students will assimilate information about Iranian culture. They will obtain a deeper understanding of Iran¿s history, literature, art and culture.
