| Summary | In 1982 Britain and Argentina fought a brief, but bloody, war over the Falkland Islands. This course, which is taught over one semester, examines selected aspects of the conflict from the British perspective. |
| Course description |
Topics covered in the course include the British and Argentine claims on the Falkland islands; the Argentine invasion in April 1982 and the despatch of a British task force to the South Atlantic; the efforts of General Alexander Haig to find a negotiated settlement to the crisis; the sinking of the Argentine cruiser, General Belgrano; the establishment of a beachhead at San Carlos by British forces; the Battle for Stanley; the attack on the British landing ship, Sir Galahad, at Fitzroy; the media war; and the impact of the war on British politics. There will also be an analysis of two British television dramas about the conflict.
