SummaryThe work placement is designed to give students experience of applying and developing their knowledge and skills on real projects for host organisations involved in the visual arts, heritage or the built environment in and around Edinburgh.
Course description The placement takes place on two days per week during Semester 1. In Semester 2, students will produce a work placement report, which acts as the assessed output for the course. It consists of three elements: a discussion of the context of the work (c.1000 words); a self-appraisal, assessing what the student has learned on the placement (c.2000 words); and a report on the academically-related project (c.4000 words), totalling 7,000 words in length.

The work will vary considerably from placement to placement, depending on the type of institution hosting the placement, its needs, and the interests and skills of the student. The specifics of any placement are based on a 'learning agreement' agreed by the student, the supervisor and the host organisation. This outlines the placement activity, it explains what is expected of all three parties and it defines an academically-related project that will form the core of the student's report.

The placement activity is supplemented by support from academic staff in a combination of regular class meetings and individual feedback sessions. An initial meeting explains the practical arrangements for the placement and the assessed work. It also includes a contribution from the University Careers Service. Subsequent meetings will focus on writing and research skills, the sharing of work placement experiences with peers, and introductions to the institutional landscape of culture in Edinburgh, Scotland and further afield. Guest lecturers from within the University of Edinbugh, as well as from host organisations will contribute to these meetings.

Work Placement report, 7,000 words
Feedback Students should submit an outline for their Work Placement Report (1-2 pages). The deadline for this is 12 noon on Monday, 30 January 2017. Outlines should be submitted via the Formative Feedback folder on Learn. Feedback on this outline will be given in one-on-one meetings with the course organiser during Weeks 4 and 5 of Semester 2.

Formative Assessment does not count to your final grade/mark but is used to support your learning. Feedback on formative assessment is designed to help you learn more effectively by giving you feedback on your performance and on how it can be improved and/or maintained.
