SummaryCritical versions of dada and surrealism are still male-dominated. This course refocuses critical attention on women artists breaking the frames of these traditions. Introductory sessions will explore the positioning of women in critical writings and landmark exhibitions. Subsequent sessions will offer broadly chronological case studies of works by selected women artists in order to open the critical tradition to debate and analysis, and to introduce students to oeuvres, works, and artists both marginal and currently undergoing critical reassessment. Lectures will establish general contexts and introduce theoretical frameworks through exemplary readings; seminar discussion will develop closer analysis of general themes and individual works. A gallery visit will enable students to examine the exhibition of original works by women explored during the course.
