SummaryThe course enables students to develop an appreciation of the nature of biomedical research and the scientific methods required. The course therefore complements the taught aspects of the programme by encouraging students to think independently, apply their learning in previous courses and reflect on their own practice.
Course description The course involves a research assignment conducted by the student in an approved laboratory (usually their own place of work). The course will permit the student to study in depth an aspect of his/her specialist interest which has a particular professional relevance. The research is funded by the student¿s employer. The topic is negotiated by the student with the university and employing laboratory staff. Throughout the course the student will be expected to keep a reflective diary recording the challenges they have encountered, the solutions created and the learning obtained from the experience. A project plan will also be required early on in the course to help develop time management skills. By the end of the course the student will have also undertaken an extensive Literature review and produced a research report either based on practical research or more theoretical/best practice. All four elements will be assessed.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Integrate and critically review information from a wide range of sources and to construct and defend reasoned conclusions.
  2. Think independently and demonstrate creativity in the identification of problems and their solutions.
  3. Apply the principles of scientific enquiry to design, plan and undertake a hypothesis-driven research project or an advanced critical analysis of current practice.
  4. Demonstrate at professional level an ability to communicate scientific information to peers, colleagues and others as appropriate.
  5. Apply concepts and theories to develop good professional practice in the laboratory environment.
