| Course description |
In this third year of study, students will be working towards their final dissertation portfolio. Though by this stage in the programme a degree of autonomy is expected, they will continue to consult with and receive feedback from their supervisor, as well as contributing to three student-led writing forums. By this point they should be consolidating the range of writing skills which they have acquired and developed over the previous two years. They should be generating, redrafting and refining the material which they intend to submit for their final folio. They will be directing the critical skills they have honed, by way of critiquing published texts and the work in progress of their peers, towards their own manuscripts, to ensure that their final submission is of as high a standard as possible.

During the course of the year, formative assessment will take place at regular intervals. Students will submit samples of work in progress to their supervisor. They will receive in-depth feedback, both textually specific and general, and have the opportunity to request clarification on points made. In this third and final year, it is expected that students have developed their critiquing skills to a high level and so their writing forums, in which small groups of students offer peer critique on work in progress, will operate as autonomous learning forums. At the end of the academic year, students submit a dissertation portfolio of creative work (circa 20,000 words of fiction or circa 30 pp of poetry) for summative assessment. Once a mark has been approved by the external examiner, students will receive markers' comments on their work.
