SummaryA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Spanish, designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Spanish. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Spanish.

All students take all elements of assessment including the examination.

This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.

On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation Spanish Language 2 in Semester 1(20 credits) or in Semester 2 (20 credits), which follow on from Foundation Spanish Language 1.
Course description Foundation Spanish Language 1 is intended for complete beginners and aims to equip students with a basic grounding in written and spoken Spanish. At the end of this course, students should reach approximately level A1/1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students who pass the course will be eligible to continue studying Spanish in Foundation Spanish Language 2 (ELCH07010).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. To identify and compare basic cultural differences in terms of customs (such as meals, schedules) and everyday situations.
  2. To read and understand short simple texts regarding personal information including likes and dislikes, hobbies, family, shopping and health.
  3. To tell and to write basic conversations concerning familiar topics as the ones described above.
  4. To distinguish and to put into practice basic skills useful for students without a background on language learning (such as how to use bilingual dictionaries, or how to develop awareness of structural differences between their native tongue and the target language).
  5. To develop critical skills to ensure the use of reliable language resources both printed and/or digital (e.g. bilingual dictionaries, grammar books, translation tools).
