Summary | This post-introductory course is intended for students who have successfully completed Foundation German Language 1 (ELCG07009) or have reached an equivalent standard (Standard Grade/GCSE). It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of German at Highers/A-level or above.
All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Knowledge and understanding: Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of personal relevance, such as personal information, local geography, employment/ study. Can communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of her/ his background and immediate environment.
- Practice: applied knowledge and understanding: Achieve German language competence comparable to the CEFR Level A2/1. Can have short conversations and ask and answer simple questions about familiar topics. Can ask and answer simple questions about things in the past. (e.g., yesterday, last week, last year). Can understand short, simple texts on familiar subjects, which consist of high-frequency, everyday or job-related language. Can write about things and people he/ she knows swell using simple language, for example descriptions of friends, what happened during the day.
- Generic cognitive skills: Produce and read texts on basic everyday themes engage in listening, spoken and written language activities at A2/1 level.
- Communication and ICT: Give a short power-point presentation on a trip to a German-speaking country. Develop critical skills to ensure the use of reliable language resources both printed and/or digital (e.g. bilingual dictionaries, grammar books, translation tools).
- Autonomy, accountability and working with others: Take responsibility for independent vocabulary acquisition and grammatical study; for monitoring one¿s engagement in German language activities outside of the classroom (eg. online resources, extra learning materials available from LEARN, main library, DVD library).
