Summary	The course offers the opportunity to research in depth a subject that holds special interest to the student, subject to prior approval by the section head. Dissertation preparation takes place during the student's period of residence abroad. All Single Hons students are required to do preparation for a MEL Dissertation. All 3rd year Joint Hons students studying 2 languages and all Joint Hons students studying 1 language and another non-language subject (excluding MEL and EU Studies Curriculum B) who are working abroad, or studying as independent students and are not on Erasmus exchanges, and also those Joint Hons students who have not arranged to have their credits counted from Latin American universities are required to do preparation for an MEL Dissertation.

Additional Information (Assessment)	The dissertation will be approximately 6,000 words in length (excluding bibliography, footnotes and appendices), and written in the target foreign language. Students are required to complete and submit a MEL Dissertation Preparation form (available on LEARN) to the TO by 4pm Friday of Week 1, Semester 1 of their 4th year.

Learning Outcomes
The aim of a dissertation is to develop and demonstrate analytical and organisational skills in a particular area, this giving students an insight into the world of research and scholarship. A dissertation does not necessarily aim at exhaustiveness within its field or topic, nor does it need to incorporate original research, although both elements (ie exhaustiveness and originality) may be apparent in the completed dissertation.
