Summary | This course provides the opportunity for an individual course member or group to engage in supported self-study in a specialist area not covered by another course within the MSc in Digital Education Programme. The course topic must fall within the domains of study covered by the Digital Education Programme and is conditional on there being supervisors and assessors who have expertise in the topic area. Permission to enrol on this course is conditional on a satisfactory contract (as described below) being produced by the student and approved by the programme director.
Only one individually negotiated study course is allowed to contribute towards any award within the programme.
Each independent study course will involve a written contract drawn up by the course member(s) in consultation with his/her/group supervisor. Supervisors will be appointed by the Digital Education Programme Director, with the consent of the supervisor's Head of Institute. The contract will be agreed by the supervisor and a second member of academic staff, and will be presented to the School Postgraduate Studies Committee for ratification. It will then be placed within the course member's file. A contract may be drawn up for an individual or a group. The contract will contain the following elements:

Along with the learning outcomes below, students undertaking this course will gain experience of:
- devising a programme of study equivalent to 20 credits at level 11;

Learning Outcomes
The course will enable participants to:
¿ Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts relevant to the subject of their independent study, and critical engagement with these;
¿ Demonstrate critical engagement with a range of literature relevant to their topic;
¿ Self-direct their learning throughout their consideration of a topic of professional or personal relevance.
In addition to these three generic outcomes which apply to all students taking this course, additional learning outcomes will vary with each project and will be specified in the course contract.
