SummarySpecialists in visual impairment need a solid grounding and knowledge of vision, the effects of ocular and cerebral visual impairment, and the implications of these for developing and learning. Skills in assessing functional vision are necessary so that, using knowledge of the child's visual abilities (and disabilities), they may engage in the assessment of development.

Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge of vision, the effects of ocular and cerebral visual impairment and the implications of these for developing and learning.
2. Skills in assessing functional vision and the interpretation and application of the results.
3. Knowledge to enable them to choose appropriately from and to administer a variety of assessment procedures and, where appropriate to design their own.
4. Ability to apply the outcomes of assessment through arrange of curricular approaches.
5. Competence in sighted guide technique and knowledge of what is involved in assessing for an effective mobility programme.
6. Ability to work as an effective member of a multi-agency assessment team, including parents.
7. Critical reflection on their own practice in the area of assessment, relating this to relevant theory and recent research.
