| Summary | This third year course is framed around a block placement which gives students the opportunity to develop the capacity to make competent, confident and defensible judgements and to undertake further development towards the gradual transition into the field of practice. |
| Course description |
This course comprises a 10 week block placement, together with pre-placement preparation and post-placement review. It aims to consolidate and integrate learning from earlier practice experience and the taught elements of the programme. In particular, it offers students the opportunity to engage in negotiated and sustained educational practice with groups. It aims to provide a challenging and supportive environment in which students can test their strengths and weaknesses as critically reflective practitioners. Students are prepared for the placement experience in the university prior to beginning the placement. The skills of reflective practice are developed during the placement, in the post-placement review session and the preparation session for the panel presentation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of significant theories, concepts and principles required for effective professional practice in community education contexts and a critical understanding of the connections between theory, policy and practice in the field of Community Education.
- Apply knowledge, skills and understanding in using a wide range of professional skills, techniques and practices with groups and individuals on placement, including contexts that include a degree of unpredictability and/or specialism.
- Critically identify, define, conceptualise and analyse complex policy and professional problems and issues in the Community Education employment context.
- Offer critical insights, interpretations and solutions to problems and issues that arise in professional Community Education contexts using a wide range of skills in support of established or alternative practices in community education, in order to communicate with peers, colleagues or community groups on an appropriate professional level.
- Identify areas of relative autonomy and exercise initiative in professional activities and settings.

| Additional Class Delivery Information |
400 hours of learning time in university and on placement as follows:
1. Introduction to placement (6 hours)
2. Negotiation of placement with student and agency (4 hours)
3. Pre-placement preparation (8 hours)
4. 10 weeks full-time placement (350 hours)
5. Post-Placement review (8 hours)
6. Panel presentation and preparation (24 hours)
Individual meetings with students to negotiate placement will take place from September onwards.
Friday 16th January 2015, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm Pre-Placement Preparation.
Placement: 19th January - 3rd April 2015. Placement tutors will set up and make mid-placement review visits to each student.
