SummaryThe course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of research and practice so that prospective practitioners in education, health and performance can make informed decisions in relation to the promotion of safe working practices. As health and well-being becomes an area of increased prominence in the workplace it is important that prospective professionals are aware of and know about policies related to safe and healthy practice. Informed by a social model of inclusion, the course seeks to enable practitioners to become aware of health and safety regulations, prevention of work related injuries and some common clinical conditions so that they can seek to create supportive health enhancing environments. This online course provides students with the opportunity to explore a range of issues related to the promotion of well-being and create materials that would support the promotion of safe practice in the their related field of practice.
Course description Developing a knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations, prevention of work related injuries and some common clinical conditions are important across a range of professional contexts. This course is designed to enable students to have an awareness of current issues and policies related to working in practical contexts and develop knowledge and understanding so they can promote safe and effective practice. The accumulated knowledge gained form the course will include understanding policy related to health and safety, such as fire safety, smoking, drug and alcohol use, child protection issues and risk assessment.

The course will be delivered over 200 hours which includes 20 hours of lectures, (online delivery), interactive group work (30 hours) and independent-study (150 hours). It will address topics that include health and safety regulations, prevention of work related injuries and some common clinical conditions that are important to have a knowledge and understanding of when working in practical contexts (e.g. diabetes, asthma and hypermobility).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety regulations and be able to put together a health and safety policy for an identified professional practice
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements of the defining features of the disability discrimination act and articulate an understanding of specific needs of people with physical and learning difficulties with respect to an identified professional practice
  3. To be aware of and demonstrate how to manage common clinical conditions that might be encountered within the professional environment ( e.g. diabetes, asthma, hypermobility)
  4. Undertake an analysis of different types on injury that may occur in the professional environment and demonstrate how these may be prevented
  5. Evaluate professional issues relating to the chosen practice (e.g. duty of care, confidentiality , codes of conduct)
