SummaryThis course builds on the introduction to curriculum and pedagogy in Year 1 of the programme. The course has a particular focus on teaching and learning in the curriculum areas of Expressive Arts and Languages in the first years of school. The early years of language and literacy development are critical to all learning, therefore the teaching and learning that takes place in these first years of school must be well informed, stimulating, effective and appropriate. Learning in the curriculum area of Languages is closely linked with learning through the Expressive Arts and this link will be exploited particularly in the areas of Music, Drama, and Dance. The course will encourage students to adopt a creative interdisciplinary approach, exploring the notions and understanding associated with ?active learning= as a stimulus around which to build curricula appropriate to the teaching of Languages and Expressive Arts. Learning and teaching in Curriculum and Pedagogy 2a builds on students= prior knowledge and understanding gained in Year 1 through their University studies and placement experiences in a pre-school and primary school settings. It also builds on this experience to help prepare students for a Primary 1-3 placement in Year 2 and future placements in Year 3 and 4.
