SummaryStudents will have the opportunity to explore critical and contemporary debates used in the study of visual and material culture.
Course description This course introduces students to some of the key social issues facing contemporary society and the response of design and visual communication practices. Themes covered by the course include: disability, cultural difference, gender and ageing. The course is designed to enable students to think about design and visual culture in a critically engaged way. In this course students will also be encouraged to approach their own design practices in a reflexive manner.

Feedback Formative assessment is provided at the mid-point of the academic year. There is also continual formative feedback and feed forward throughout the academic year during group sessions and through peer group work.

Assessment is by submission of written work throughout the course with summative feedback at each point of submission.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. RESEARCH: Use a variety of appropriate research approaches to show an understanding of visual images, artefacts, built environments and texts.
  2. ANALYSE: Demonstrate detailed knowledge of and critically engage with the main theories of cultural production.
  3. OMMUNICATE: Show initiative in managing and communicating your work through appropriate responses.
