SummaryThis course will present the mechanics and biomechanical principles underlying tooth movement; the appliance systems used in orthodontics; and the development of the various appliance systems.
Course description The different types of appliance systems will be demonstrated and compared, together with their advantages and disadvantages. The physics and mechanics of appliance systems will form a large proportion of this module. Treatment of patients on the clinics will familarise the student with the practicalities of everyday specialist practice of orthodontics.

  1. Be able to describe the five basic types of tooth movement and the appliances needed to produce them
  2. Be fully conversant with the different types of appliances used in orthodontics
  3. Understand the history of the development of fixed appliances
