| Summary | The project forms an extremely important component of the degree course since it brings together many aspects of the skills and knowledge acquired during the course. All students will undertake an individual project. Topics investigated may be chosen by the student or suggested by the staff. The area of research will need to be agreed with a supervisor and the course tutors before commencement of the project.
The research need not be on an original topic but should increase information in the chosen area. It must be conducted according to the accepted methods of scientific investigation, and be presented bound in the agreed University format.
Aims:
. To introduce or reinforce and develop the principles of scientific research methodology
. To enhance the students¿ understanding of the knowledge in one particular aspect of implantology.
. To enhance their ability to be critical and creative thinkers
. To implement IT skills learnt on other parts of the course
. To facilitate the students¿ personal development of transferable skills, including the collection, manipulation and use of information relating to dentistry.
. To develop the skills to design and execute a research project
Objectives:
On completion of the course the student should be able to:
. Use basic IT proficiently
. Show a deeper knowledge and understanding of one particular aspect of dentistry
. To collate, analyse and assimilate research data to a high standard.
. Show the ability to produce a logical, relevant and comprehensive account on a particular topic.
. Show the ability to carry out a piece of research independently.
. Show the ability for critical appraisal of their own work.
. Show the ability to defend personal opinions based on a critical appraisal of the evidence produced.
. Place their findings in the context of other published works.
. Show the ability to communicate their findings to others.

2. How to read a scientific paper/paper critical appraisal
. What is a research protocol / how to plan a research project
4. Basic Statistics
5. Ethics in clinical research
6. Informed consent
7. How to give a scientific / clinical presentation make a scientific poster.
