SummaryDuring their third year abroad while studying for these combined degrees, students carry out guided reading under the supervision of a member of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology and write an essay on a historical theme which makes use of the language that they are studying. The essays are handed in on the student's return at the beginning of Year 4.
Course description The year abroad essay (worth 40 credit points) is the only piece of work that students are expected to do in their third year for History. It gives students the opportunity to develop their own research project or discuss historiography on a subject that interests them in the place where they are working or studying, and is of their own choosing. It will help them develop the organizational and analytical skills that they have attained in the previous two years of study.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A pass or passes in 40 credits of first level historical courses or equivalent and a pass or passes in 40 credits of second level historical courses or equivalent.

Additional Information (Assessment) The essay is the sole component of assessment. Assessment is carried over to the fourth year in line with the standard practice for modern language degree programmes.
Feedback Students correspond with their essay supervisor whilst abroad to discuss progress and receive feedback. Written feedback on the final submitted essay is made available to students after the Exam Boards.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
